In enemy territory, Japanese patrols would capture American pilots, torture them, then kill them. Part of the training regimen for Hump pilots included the right way to use the last bullet on oneself. A 222nd birthday is quite a milestone, and the USS Constitution celebrated in style on Oct. 18, 2019.
Although the China National Aviation Corporation ran the route before the war and its pilots continued to run cargo over the Hump, the Army’s pilots were newly-trained flying officers with little experience flying in anything, let alone extreme weather.
No fewer than 700 Allied planes crashed or got shot down and 1,200 airmen died. “Every 340 tons delivered cost the life of a pilot,” historian Francis Pike writes in his exhaustive new history Hirohito’s War: The Pacific War, 1941–1945.
Flying "The Hump" was One of World War II's Most Dangerous Jobs
“There was an approximately one in three chance of being killed,” Pike writes — one of the worst wartime survival rates ever.

HVCC AVIATION GROUP is a division of HONOR VALOR COURAGE CORPORATION which is dedicated to serving veterans and their families. The HVCC AVIATION GROUP was developed in part to honor Hunter T. Butts a great pilot who was known to fly anything that had wings on it. Mr. Butts flew with the famed Sky Train, flying over the HUMP and was one of the first to ever fly a C47 aircraft over 18,000 feet with no oxygen. The Sky Train ferried supplies into China for the troop from India over the Himalaya Mountains with no weapons to defend the pilots or their planes from the Japanese enemy aircraft. Mr. Butts was shot down three time and rescued by the indigenous people of Burma. Mr. Butts received five Air Metals and the Distinguish Flying Cross for his bravery in the China India Burma (CIB) Campaign. After the war Mr. Butts continued to fly as a commercial and private pilot and as the commander of the Air National Guard out of Martinsburg, WV. Mr. Butts went on to a very successful career in retail and high-end restaurants. Mr. Butts past away at the age of 76. Mr. Butts last thoughts were of flying with his crew. Hunter put out his hand and touched the Face of God.

But the Chinese were strapped for weapons, ammo and supplies. The Allies — and America, in particular — were desperate to keep China fighting and, by extension, keep Japan bogged down. As Pike explains, prior to May 1942 the Allies maintained a land route from India through Burma into China.
